The Pilates Method

Named after its inventor, Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates Method is a system of exercise designed to stretch, strengthen, and balance the muscles of the entire body using precise movements in a series of exercises along with specialized breathwork. Pilates utilizes specific apparatus intended to lengthen and sculpt muscles with emphasis placed on building core strength and increasing spinal flexibility. The goal of Pilates is to address the wellness of an individual as a whole by creating overall uniform development in the body. Regular practice can improve one’s overall health and well-being!

Classical Pilates

Many adaptations of Pilates are currently on the market, but Classical Pilates is considered its truest form. Classical Pilates reflects heavily on the original system of exercise and apparatus created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1940s.  Developed as a holistic system to improve mental alertness, posture, coordination, responsiveness, and precision of movement by strengthening the core muscle groups and focusing on spinal flexibility. Classical Pilates stresses the order of exercise, set repetitions, and coordinated breathwork, and it is performed on classical apparatus like Gratz, the original manufacturer of Joe’s designs.  Classical Pilates is a vigorous workout designed to challenge the mind and the body!

In Classical Pilates, the precision of movement is critical to performing each exercise correctly. “It’s better to do fewer repetitions of each exercise slowly and precisely, than more repetitions with incorrect form or posture."

At Coastal Pilates & Yoga, we embrace the Classical Method as originally designed by Joe Pilates himself. We work through set sequences of exercises (whether on the reformer, chair, or mat) and are proud to say our studio is equipped with all Gratz and Contrology apparatus. Classes are offered as private, duet, or in small group settings designed to create a relaxed atmosphere and maximize focused attention ensuring your safe and effective progress. Our flexible hours allow you to schedule sessions at your convenience.

For optimum results, we recommend 2-3 sessions per week whether in a small group or private/duet session.
